Welcome to my website.
My name is Billy Briggs and I'm a journalist in Scotland, UK, with nearly 30 years experience.
I am co-editor of an award-winning investigative website called The Ferret which is dedicated to public interest journalism
I was a staff reporter at the Irvine Times, and then The Herald, in Glasgow, before freelancing from 2006 to 2026. During that time I worked for, among others, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Scotland On Sunday, The Herald, The National, Sunday National, The Scotsman, The Times, The Observer, New Statesman, Daily Record, Mail On Sunday, Irish Examiner, Vice, Politico, New Zealand Herald, The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, Al Jazeera and the BBC.
I've reported from more than 20 countries, covering issues such as human rights violations, far right extremism, femicide, child labour, human trafficking and Islamist terrorism. Foreign dispatches include stories from Gaza, Haiti, India, Iraq, Israel, Pakistan, Syria and the West Bank.
As a co-founder and editor of The Ferret I'm fortunate to be involved with Scotland's only not-for-profit media organisation dedicated to public interest journalism.

Since 1997, I've written more than 3000 stories and this website provides a snapshot of my reporting to date.
I have never been a member of a political party.
The photography on this site was produced by award-winning photojournalist Angie Catlin, whom I've worked with since 2002. Her photography has been published by The New York Times and The Guardian, among other major media.
